LIMBUNGAN: TRAGEDI HITAM 1975
‘Raise the Story of the Tragedy of the Tiger Attack in Limbungan Village’
The belief in the existence of a tiger, a human being who practices black magic to the point of being able to turn into a tiger, was quite synonymous among the Malay community in the past. Based on this belief, it inspired the production company Lil Studios Sdn. Bhd. to produce a thriller film, Limbungan: Tragedi Hitam 1975.
Its director, Fazli Yasin, said that it is a film that takes the audience into the mythical world of the tiger behind the development conflict in a village in the 1970s. “The idea to produce the film Limbungan came from my interest in the art of Malay mythological creatures, especially the tiger. “Since I was little, I have often drawn strange creatures, including producing a graphic novel about the tiger when I was seven years old,” he said.Fazli berkata, dengan penghasilan filem berkenaan juga adalah tanda ‘cinta’ terhadap seni reka bentuk makhluk dan mitologi alam Melayu.
Limbungan: Tragedi Hitam 1975 tells the story of Ramli and Malik’s journey to Kampung Limbungan to take over an abandoned project. However, they were attacked by a terrifying wild tiger, forcing them both to struggle to survive. Featuring Amerul Affendi and Kodi Rasheed as the main characters, the film also stars other actors such as Cat Farish, D’Boy Hamdan, Bohari Ibrahim, Zainal Isa, Nor Albaniah and Azan Addin. According to him, what is interesting about this film is that the story of this wild tiger was once told through the notes of Sir Hugh Clifford, the Resident of Pahang who served from 1896 to 1903. Fazli said that through the notes there is a story about a wild tiger that attacked a family.
“This artificial tiger is a practitioner of black magic who made a pact with the devil and this creature only drinks blood and does not eat all its prey. “So, what is related to this artificial tiger is depicted in the film Limbungan and we combined it with the historical story of the hydroelectric project in Lake Kenyir in 1975,” he said.
Meanwhile, regarding the challenges during the production, Fazli said that they had to find suitable locations, especially rocky terrain, watery areas and large trees. He explained that to overcome these challenges, they had to design a large artificial forest location set, as opposed to filming in a real forest because it would be too expensive.
“We also had to produce a realistic tiger costume, and I even made up to seven versions of the costume before choosing the best one,” he said. After filming in February 2024, the film Limbungan: Tragedi Hitam 1975 will begin screening in cinemas nationwide starting February 6, 2025.
